Blue Marine Foundation

United for marine conservation

We stand united with Blue Marine Foundation to protect the ocean and support coastal communities. Blue Marine’s mission is to see at least 30 per cent of the ocean effectively protected by 2030 and the whole ocean sustainably managed by delivering effective marine protected areas, tackling overfishing and supporting sustainable use of the sea. With a vast global portfolio and a local focus, working closely with grassroots organisations and coastal communities, Blue Marine is working to secure a healthy ocean, abundant with life, that supports people and the climate. The ocean’s importance to our industry cannot be overstated. It is not the backdrop upon which yachting plays out; it is the main character. If you are not familiar with Blue Marine and its conservation achievements, we strongly encourage you to dive into the impactful work the charity is undertaking in collaboration with its partners.

Few missions are as vital as the one led by Blue Marine Foundation, and even fewer contribute as significantly to marine conservation. I wholeheartedly support the charity and its commitment to protecting our ocean.

Peter Lürssen

Our Projects

Lürssen has pledged support to 30 Blue Marine projects worldwide. Spanning Central America, Europe, Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, these initiatives aim to safeguard and restore our ocean while tackling the unique challenges each region faces.

Transboundary & UK Projects

Cross-border programmes

Just like the ocean itself, many Blue Marine projects lap across different shores. These efforts include conserving whale migratory routes, protecting the high seas and the Blue Belt, addressing the entire ecosystem of Mediterranean fish markets, and rolling out Blue Policies that empower cross-border populations.

A BETTER BRITISH ISLES

Blue Marine is very active in its home country, the United Kingdom. With projects across the British Isles and wider UK territories, it is calling for improved management of UK seas, a ban on destructive fishing in all UK marine protected areas and an end to harmful fishing subsidies.

Ascension Island

A blueprint for global ocean protection

In 2019, thanks to Blue Marine and the Great Blue Ocean coalition, Ascension Island’s waters became the second largest no-take zone in the Atlantic. The intervention by Blue Marine and the establishment of the Ascension Island Marine Protected Area Community Trust fund (AIMPACT) will ensure long lasting preservation. Today, green turtles safely nest on Long Beach and species like marlin, sharks and tuna thrive. In the heavily fished Atlantic, Ascension is an oasis. Lürssen is proud to have supported this project since its inception.

Global Commitment in Action

Blue Marine is on a mission to see the whole ocean sustainably managed and this can only be achieved responsibly through localised initiatives. Its projects span the globe, each as unique as the challenges it is trying to solve. From coral reefs in the Maldives to critical migration corridors in the Dominican Republic, from pioneering policy in Greece to regional collaboration in the Dutch Caribbean, and community empowerment in Mozambique.

DUTCH CARRIBEAN

Blue Marine is working with partners across the Dutch Caribbean to support the islands in achieving 30 per cent protection of their waters by expanding and effectively managing marine protected areas. With the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance, Blue Marine is supporting regional collaboration and capacity building to enhance marine conservation efforts around these beautiful and biodiverse islands.
