Meet Oguzhan Akilli
What drew you to yacht design?
Although I can't fully explain the reason, I have had a deep passion for yachts since a very young age. As a child, I would spend hours gazing at yacht drawings, dreaming without questioning why I was so fascinated. Over time, this interest evolved into a drive to research, learn, and create. Yacht design is not just a profession for me; it feels like an instinctive calling. This world, where engineering, aesthetics, and imagination converge, is where I feel most at home.
Which designers inspire your craft?
The most important factor that influences me in yacht design is the perfect harmony between aesthetics and engineering. I have always admired Espen Øino’s strong and distinctive lines, and Tim Heywood’s elegance in details. Emrecan Özgün has also caught my attention. In Emrecan Özgün’s designs, the perfect harmony between aesthetics and engineering takes centre stage. The aggressive and sleek lines on the exterior are harmoniously designed with the interior, ensuring both areas are utilised in the most efficient and aesthetically pleasing way. This is why Emrecan Özgün is another designer I draw inspiration from.
How would you like to see yacht design evolve?
I believe the future of yacht design lies in sustainable innovation and adaptable architecture. I envision yachts where renewable technologies are more integrated, modular interiors are developed to adapt to different uses, and forms are designed to reduce environmental impact while enriching the experience of life on the water. A yacht should be both a sanctuary and a form of expression – a design approach that looks forward with its shape, yet remains timeless in its spirit.
