    Aleksandra Orescanin

    Young Designer 2025

ZAZI is a symbol of exploration and self-discovery. Named after the Zulu concept of “knowing oneself,” ZAZI reflects the journey of an experienced yachtsman transitioning from the familiar shores of the Mediterranean to the uncharted beauty of the Northwest Passage. The design merges refined elegance with rugged capability, enabling her to thrive in tranquil and extreme environments. The exterior has an understated sophistication, presented by a strong, purposeful profile, balanced by clean surfaces and a low silhouette. The fully exposed helicopter hangar emphasises functionality and adventure, reinforcing its expeditionary nature. Inside, the yacht offers a warm, open, and opulent atmosphere, creating a comforting retreat which ensures a smooth transition for the owner. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, ZAZI invites its owner to embrace the unknown while honouring a rich maritime legacy, creating unforgettable moments along the way.

    Meet Aleksandra Orescanin

What drew you to yacht design?
I was initially drawn to car design; I loved understanding why certain shapes were used and how they could evoke emotion. During my final years at university, I chose yacht design as an elective course and had the privilege of learning from professors whose passion for the field was contagious. I quickly became fascinated by the challenge of giving each yacht its own personality while balancing the technical requirements that make a design feasible. What drew me in was the interdisciplinary nature of yacht design – how interior and exterior design, engineering, naval architecture, and production all come together. It’s a unique and gratifying field.

    Which designers inspire your craft?
Inspiration is everywhere. For me, it comes from architecture, product and automotive design, sculpture, painting, and nature. I have an extremely long list of designers and yachts that inspire me. I admire studios that focus on creating timeless, elegant designs and those pushing the boundaries of what's possible with new ideas and technologies. The work of designers who blend creativity with technical precision has deeply inspired me and continues to shape my approach. Certain yachts, with their innovative designs and thoughtful details, have also made a lasting impression. These projects continue to encourage my passion for yacht design and motivate me to explore new possibilities within the industry.

How would you like to see yacht design evolve?
If we want yachting to continue for generations to come, sustainability has to become a priority. Embracing innovative solutions in both design and engineering is essential for building a more responsible and lasting future. I’m also excited about the growing openness to bold, unconventional ideas. Whether it’s rethinking interior layouts, exploring new proportions, or experimenting with more complex surfaces, the idea of what’s “normal” is evolving. I believe this shift will lead to more inspiring, forward-thinking design, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.
